Leaders in Health

The Canadian Digestive Health Foundation is supported by two volunteer boards of directors. The Governing Board provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, policy, legal and governance.  The Advisory Board manages operations, development and implementation.

Working collaboratively, these dedicated individuals advance the objectives of Foundation which are to:

  • advance the science and knowledge of diseases of the digestive organs
  • assist research, training, prevention and treatment of the conditions impairing the normal function of the digestive organs, including their functions in nutrition
  • promote dissemination of knowledge of diseases of the digestive organs through the Canadian community, and
  • assist in the development of new methods to ensure better quality of life people afflicted with these disorders.
  • Dr. Richard Fedorak

    Dr. Richard Fedorak is Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  As a gastroenterologist, he practices at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute; he is a consulting physician at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. 

    Dr. Fedorak graduated from Medicine at the University of Alberta in 1978 with first class honours. His postdoctoral training included an internship at the University of Western Ontario and residency training in General Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto. His clinical and research fellowship training in gastroenterology was completed at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. In 1987, he returned to the University of Alberta as a faculty member supported by an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research award.

    Outside of academia, Dr. Fedorak is not only President of the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation but Chairman of the Research Committee for the World Gastroenterology Organization. 

    A recipient of 21 awards and research grants in excess of $45 million, Dr. Fedorak is an internationally recognised expert clinician-researcher in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He has published over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts regarding patient care, treatment, and the etiology of IBD. He leads a dynamic research team engaged in the study of inflammation and the intestinal microbiome, the application of metabolomics to identify biomarkers of disease, and evaluate novel therapeutics for IBD and celiac disease. He has helped shape the next generation of clinician-researchers by training more than 120 graduates, residents, and fellows. In 2010, Dr. Fedorak co-founded a University of Alberta spin-out company, Metabolomic Technologies Inc. that is launching a non-invasive screening test for the precursor condition to colorectal cancer.

     At home, Dr. Fedorak enjoys life to the fullest with his wife Karen and they look forward to family gatherings with their adult children, Kristin and Bryan.
