CDHF Hosts Canada's First-ever Digestive Health

The summit, presented in partnership with Danone, brought together family physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dieticians and nutritionists. Experts from across the country delivered important information on colon cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease; the dangerous impact of obesity and salt; how fibre and probiotics factor into a healthy digestive tract, and, the powerful influence of social media on physician-patient relations.

"The growing impact digestive diseases have on Canadian lives, our economy, and health care system is enormous," says foundation president, Dr. Richard Fedorak. "The time has come to acknowledge the situation and take action. The foundation's Digestive Health Summit for Health Care Professionals is one more step along our path to meeting the pressing need to establish digestive health as a national priority."

Canada has one of the highest prevalence and incidence rates of digestive disorders in the world. Each year, approximately 20 million Canadians are affected and we incur over $18 billion in health care costs and lost productivity. The goal of the summit was to help further educate health care professionals so they can provide better care to their clients thereby improving the digestive health of Canadians, reducing the prevalence and incidence rates of digestive disease, and reduce related costs.
