Bring Your Tummy Back in Balance

If you suffer from watery or loose stools (diarrhea), often feel an urgent need to rush to the toilet and feel you have little or no control of your bowels, try these tips to help ease the problem:

  • Keep a food diary or use the CDHF’s Gi BodyGuard app – some cases of diarrhea can be caused by a specific reaction to a specific food. A food diary may help you identify the source of your tummy trouble
  • Drink plenty of water each day while decreasing your intake of caffeinated, alcoholic, and sugar-rich beverages such as pop and fruit juices
  • When travelling, remember to drink bottled water rather than tap water
  • Be careful when preparing raw poultry, meat and fish alongside fresh produce as cross-contamination can lead to food poisoning, a common cause of diarrhea
  • When in the kitchen, regularly and properly wash your hands, surfaces and utensils with hot, soapy water
It is important to note that diarrhea can be a serious and even a life-threatening condition. It is especially worrisome for young children and the aged because of the threat of dehydration. You should see a doctor if diarrhea lasts longer than a few days, or is accompanied by fever, bloody stools or severe pain.
