{"id":1389,"date":"2022-07-25T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cdhf.staging.not4prod.com\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2022-08-22T22:39:41","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T22:39:41","slug":"the-risk-of-contracting-covid-19-does-not-increase-in-patients-with-celiac-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/the-risk-of-contracting-covid-19-does-not-increase-in-patients-with-celiac-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"The risk of contracting COVID-19 does NOT increase in patients with Celiac Disease: First Global Study of COVID-19 and Celiac Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March 2020, there has been a number of studies suggesting that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/digestive-conditions\/celiac-disease\/\">celiac disease<\/a>, a chronic immune-mediated GI condition triggered by gluten, is associated with an increased risk of respiratory infections\u00a0<sup>(1-3).<\/sup>\u00a0However, how that related to the risk of COVID-19 was unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this, a team of researchers from McMaster University, in partnership with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.celiac.ca\/covid-19-celiac-study-released\/?fbclid=IwAR2iL3YJWWOnWG5GJ8JXrI7eVemWPKE5yXa_5f3o8zZGbdgqZm03XT6yEdo\">Canadian Celiac Association<\/a>, conducted a study to evaluate whether patients with self-reported celiac disease are at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.celiac.ca\/covid-19-celiac-study-released\/?fbclid=IwAR2iL3YJWWOnWG5GJ8JXrI7eVemWPKE5yXa_5f3o8zZGbdgqZm03XT6yEdo\">Canadian Celiac Association\u2019s interview<\/a>&nbsp;with lead researcher Dr Maria Pinto Sanchez at McMaster University, she indicates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEarly in the pandemic, every patient in our clinic was asking if their risk of contracting COVID-19 was increased due to their celiac disease. Initially, with the help of student Jamie Zhen, we developed a survey intended to be used just in our clinic; however, we saw the potential to bring\/take it to a wider audience when my international colleagues expressed interest. After getting the approval of the McMaster ethics board, we brought it to the CCA to help us get the word out to celiacs across Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study included participants of all ages with self-reported celiac disease, and those without celiac disease from different countries including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Uruguay and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The outcome:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through a web-based survey, they found that patients with celiac disease had similar odds of contracting COVID-19 when compared to those who didn\u2019t.
