{"id":1416,"date":"2022-07-25T16:09:33","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T16:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cdhf.staging.not4prod.com\/?p=1416"},"modified":"2025-07-09T16:36:45","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T16:36:45","slug":"gastroparesis-charity-marathon-2020-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/gastroparesis-charity-marathon-2020-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Gastroparesis Charity Marathon: 2020 Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CDHF\u2019s Second annual Gaming for Gastroparesis Charity Stream Marathon was a HUGE success!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you missed it, on August 21<sup>st<\/sup>-23<sup>rd<\/sup>, \u00a0Jennifer (or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/astreigha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@astreigha<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/astreigha\">\u00a0<\/a>on Twitch), our gaming for gastroparesis charity stream organizer and gastroparesis warrior, alongside a group of amazing streamers took to Twitch, playing their favourite games, raising a total of $2615 for Gastroparesis awareness and research initiatives!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve never heard of Twitch, it is an online platform where gamer\u2019s stream video games they are playing online. Viewers are able to log on and watch them, chat and even interact with the gamer as they play. One of the neat things about the platform is the ability to use it to do good in the world through charity streaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, we were lucky enough to team up with one of the many gastroparesis fighters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/astreigha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@Astreigha<\/a>\u00a0and a number of other streamers to do one of our own to raise money for gastroparesis research and awareness initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-31-at-8.51.29-AM.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7472 lazyload\" style=\"width:741px;height:397px\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"988\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-31-at-8.51.29-AM.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7472 lazyload\" style=\"width:741px;height:397px\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaming for Gastroparesis Charity Stream Lineup:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting Friday August 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;and ending on Sunday August 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, a group of eleven streamers (listed below), played various games on their channels, and set their own incentives to engage the viewers in the fun!&nbsp; Big thank you goes out to Astreigha for setting this schedule up, and for all of the amazing streamers that were involved. One of them was that if a certain amount was donated, Vaynum would have to eat a pickle juice popsicle \u2026 yuck! Vaynum was a great sport however, and stepped up to the plate for this great cause! He was suffering from three different medical conditions over a period of five years, with Gastroparesis being one of them. The challenge is all about smashing a pie into your face to raise awareness for this debilitating disease. So, it was very fitting that our CEO took the challenge after hitting that $1000 mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Special Guest of the Gaming for Gastroparesis Charity Stream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Astreigha\u2019s stream on Sunday, for one hour we had a special guest appearance from wrestler\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheSamiCallihan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sami Callihan<\/a>, who was so fun and charismatic to have on stream! It is extremely difficult to treat and has very few treatment options. There is no cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gastroparesis is also often referred to as delayed gastric emptying. The term \u201cgastric\u201d refers to the stomach. Usually, the stomach voids its contents in a disciplined fashion into the small intestine. In gastroparesis, the muscle contractions that allow the food to move along the digestive tract do not function normally and the stomach does not empty quickly enough. Gastroparesis is defined by long-term symptoms combined with postponed stomach emptying in the absence of any observable obstruction or blockage. The delayed stomach emptying is confirmed by a test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What causes gastroparesis?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cause of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/digestive-conditions\/gastroparesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gastroparesis<\/a>\u00a0is often unclear. However, it has been observed that in many cases, gastroparesis is caused by damage to the vagus nerve (an important link from the gut to the brain.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vagus nerve is responsible for managing the intricate mechanisms in your digestive tract, including communicating to the muscles in your stomach when to contract and move food into the small intestine. An impaired vagus nerve cannot signal normally to your stomach muscles.
