In plain language, probiotics are \u201cgood microbes.\u201d These friendly microbes help us digest food, maintain health and fight disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think <a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/feeding-your-microbiota-fibre-prebiotics-and-probiotics\/\">probiotics<\/a> are only available in supplement form, but some of the most common probiotics&nbsp;are offered in foods including fortified yogurts, drinks, and even formulas for children! However, these should be taken with the same caution as probiotic supplements, as not all functional foods with probiotics or \u201clive cultures\u201d have evidence to support their benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;It\u2019s important that you talk with your doctor, pharmacist,&nbsp;or dietitian&nbsp;first&nbsp;before taking&nbsp;a probiotic,&nbsp;to ensure you&nbsp;have a proper diagnosis, or know why you are taking&nbsp;it. Together, you can select an appropriate probiotic&nbsp;that is the most suitable&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>you.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The issue of choosing the right probiotic for the right reasons&nbsp;has&nbsp;been&nbsp;addressed&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aeprobio.com\/\"><strong><em>Clinical Guide to Probiotic Products<\/em><\/strong>. <\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aeprobio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2023_ProbioticGuide_CanEng.pdf\">The Clinical Guide to Probiotic Products<\/a> is an evidence-based decision-making tool for clinicians, which is independently prepared and updated every year. Probiotic strain names and doses are also listed. Favorable published clinical evidence for the&nbsp;particular strain(s)&nbsp;presented in each product are given and include numerous<a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/digestive-conditions\/\"> gastrointestinal conditions<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The handy acronym list makes it easy for you to find the functional food that has clinical evidence for your specific condition:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AAD<\/strong>&#8211; Antibiotic associated diarrhea (prevention)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/digestive-conditions\/constipation\/\">Constipation<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CDAD<\/strong>&#8211; Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea  (prevention)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CID<\/strong>&#8211; Common infectious disease (community acquired)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CMPA<\/strong> &#8211; Cow Milk Protein Allergy (including Colic due to CMPA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HP<\/strong> &#8211; Helicobacter pylori  (adjunct to standard eradication therapy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IBS<\/strong> &#8211; Irritable bowel syndrome&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ID <\/strong>&#8211; Infectious diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M\/A <\/strong>&#8211; Mood and Affect (symptoms related to stress\/anxiety; not a substitute for standard treatment)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There, you will also be able to compare the functional foods based on the level of evidence, as it is graded with a I, II, or III, with&nbsp;level&nbsp;I&nbsp;being&nbsp;the highest level:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Level&nbsp;I<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evidence obtained from at least one properly designed randomize trial&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level&nbsp;II<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evidence obtained from well-designed controlled trials without randomization&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies, preferably from more than one centre or research group&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence obtained from multiple time series with or without intervention. Dramatic results in uncontrolled trials might also be regarded as this type of evidence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level&nbsp;III<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opinions of respected authorities, based on clinical experience, descriptive studies, or reports of expert committees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div
