While more than half of people who get hemorrhoids don\u2019t report any symptoms, for others it causes severe itching and discomfort.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdhf.ca\/en\/digestive-conditions\/hemorroids\/\">Hemorrhoids<\/a> form when constipation and excessive straining lead to stretching and swelling of the cluster of veins in the rectum and anus <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3748%2Fwjg.v18.i17.2009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>. While the exact cause of hemorrhoids is unknown, there are several modifiable lifestyle factors that can help you stay healthy. Fortunately, most hemorrhoids are painless and likely to resolve on their own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What causes hemorrhoids?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are plenty of factors that make it more likely for hemorrhoids to occur. Internal hemorrhoids occur in the lower rectum, the terminal section of the large intestine and are usually painless.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">External hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus, causing irritation and damage to the skin. If a blood clot begins forming inside this type of hemorrhoid, it can cause significant pain. Fortunately, the clot typically dissolves and leaves behind a flap of excess skin.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Common symptoms of hemorrhoids<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When this condition is symptomatic, it may cause<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1053\/j.gastro.2004.03.001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anal protrusion&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Itching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Classifying internal hemorrhoids<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internal hemorrhoids are further graded based on their appearance and the degree of prolapse<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1053\/j.gastro.2004.03.001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>. Prolapse is a medical term to describe when internal organs like the blood vessels beneath the anus, push out of their usual position. If this is not possible through diet, over-the-counter fibre supplements can increase intake.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drinking more water:<\/strong> This will help make stools easier to pass and prevent excess straining and constipation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stool softeners<\/strong>: This will also make stools easier to pass and prevent straining.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Warm water bath<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2018\/0201\/p172.html#afp20180201p172-b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><sup>[<\/sup><sup>3<\/sup><sup>]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Also called a sitz bath, submerging the butt and hips in warm water for 20 minutes after bowel movements, and two or three additional times per day can help reduce irritation and soothe pain and swelling.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also many over-the-counter remedies that provide temporary relief.
