CDHF partners with Metro and their new My Health, My Choices program.
We understand that this can be frustrating and challenging. We also know that healthy eating looks different for everyone. Your culture, food traditions, personal circumstances & nutritional needs will be different from others, and they may change over time. With so many products at the grocery store, you could be searching for hours for the products that fit into YOUR lifestyle, tastes, and dietary restrictions.. until now.
This particular program is one we feel will be very beneficial for those with digestive conditions, and anyone looking to support their health through diet – whatever that may look like for you.
Metro’s My Health, My Choices program categorizes thousands of products based on a list of nearly 50 “attributes”. Those attributes include categories such as gluten-free, lactose-free, low FODMAP, plant-based, keto-friendly, vegan, whole grain, high-source of fibre, and very high-source of fibre, and more!
Well, there are currently three ways to explore these attributes – in store, online, and on their app. In store, you will be able to see green labels on nearly 9,000 products, indicating the products dietary attributes. If you are unsure, you can also download the My Metro app and scan the barcode on products to discover their attributes, if any. If you are more of a pre-planner or online shopper, you can filter products based on their attributes on Metro.ca online grocery website.
For example, if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) you may have been playing around with the idea of trying out the ‘low FODMAP diet’. If you don’t already know, FODMAPs are a group of small carbohydrate (sugar) molecules found in everyday foods. FODMAPs are carbohydrates that may be poorly absorbed in the small intestine of some people. The low FODMAP diet, is increasingly recognized as an effective dietary treatment for IBS, and it’s estimated that around 50% of people with IBS may benefit from one, however the quality of scientific evidence is very low. Of these people, there is possible benefit for overall symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, excess gas, constipation and/or diarrhea. While we always recommend implementing the low fodmap diet under the supervision of a health care professional such as a registered dietitian, it would be helpful to know which products in the grocery store are seen as low FODMAP so you can start to plan your meals. Imagine just knowing at glance that the product you want to buy is safe to eat! All that time saved scouring through nutrition labels can be saved through Metro’s My Health, My Choices Program. So, you can get back to living your best life.
Metro’s online grocery allows you to explore these products by simply filtering by attribute here. You can also scan for products you already have at home to see if they fall within the low FODMAP category as well, or browse the grocery store aisles checking for those green low FODMAP tags. This really is a game changer for people attempting this complex diet.
